Simon Says: At Easter, "God morgen!" is breaking news
We have four gospels in our New Testament with four different versions of what Jesus did when he lived on earth. It is like four various newspapers telling the same news stories from different points of view.
Together, the gospels tell the vital story of Jesus, also when it comes to the breaking news events at Easter, where Jesus conquered death on Easter morning.
One element that all the gospels agree on is that it was a small group of women who were the first to see the risen Jesus Christ on Easter morning. But they do not all agree on how He greets them. One of my favourites is Matthew (28,9), where the meeting between the women and Jesus is - literally - like a walk in the park: "Jesus met them and said, Greetings!".
In the Danish translation of the Bible, he says, "God Morgen." Short and sweet.
In English-speaking countries, it's polite to say "Good Morning" the whole morning when meeting people. So it was with an everyday greeting, Jesus met the women at the gravesite like nothing extraordinary had happened.
But something had happened: Jesus died on the cross on Friday and was buried, but now he stands alive in front of them and greets them with a "God Morgen."
When Jesus says "God Morgen" that Easter morning, it means that life has overcome death, and light has overcome darkness for the women whom he meets - and all of us.
It is a blessed greeting - Good Morning - meaning that the dark night is over and a new day's possibilities await! And by using this everyday phrase, Jesus is underlining that the resurrection on Easter morning is an event for all people in all nations and throughout all times. He is making the event timeless - beyond time and place... or rather: In the middle of your time and wherever you are.
So share "Good morning" with the world around you... and let Easter be a part of your lives. Not only in spring but all year round.
Happy Easter! Pastor Simon
